Lung Cancer Awareness Month—Breathe Deep Events

Each November, in recognition of Lung Cancer Awareness Month, ALCSI chapters host more than 50 Breathe Deep Walks and flag planting ceremonies across the country and around the world in partnership with the LUNGevity Foundation.
 

What begins as a walk becomes something much more: a gathering of survivors, families, students, physicians, researchers, and advocates united by a shared commitment to change the future of lung cancer.
 

Our flag displays transform campuses and community spaces into powerful visual tributes. Each flag planted represents a life touched by lung cancer — a survivor, a patient in treatment, or a loved one remembered. Walking through these displays is a deeply moving experience, reminding us that behind every statistic is a story, a family, and a community.
 

The Breathe Deep Walks foster connection across generations and disciplines. Survivors share their journeys. Families honor loved ones. Medical students stand alongside patients to learn, listen, and advocate. Community members gather to reduce stigma, amplify awareness, and emphasize a critical truth: lung cancer can affect anyone, and early detection saves lives.
 

Through our collaboration with LUNGevity, a national leader in lung cancer research, education, and patient support, ALCSI connects grassroots student advocacy with national impact. Together, we work to expand access to evidence-based lung cancer screening, promote equitable care, and inspire the next generation of physicians to prioritize prevention and early detection.
 

These walks and flag plantings are not only moments of remembrance — they are calls to action. They reflect our belief that awareness must lead to advocacy, advocacy must lead to screening, and screening must lead to lives saved.
